Gap when window is closed
« on: 19 April 2010 02:28 pm »
We have a small gap on the hinge side of one of our windows. when you close the window, just as the handle side meets the frame there is a small click and the bottom hinge side "jumps". As a result you can actual see a small amount of daylight between the fixed frame and the opening part. the windows are about 8 years old. This problem happened soon after installation and the supplier fixed it, but they're out of business now. Any ideas

Sounds like the window hinges need replacing. Worn or sprained window hinges cause gaps to appear, with yours also making a noise it confirms that the hinges are shot.

The company below offer a wide range of friction stay window hinges:

Did the hinge work? I get asked about matters like this all the time.

check the frame fixing points when you open the sash, and see where the fitters have screwed the outer frame of the window to the wall of the house. Sometimes they over screw the frame and bow the plastic - this will leave a gap.

Just slack off the screws abit and see if the frame pops back.

if the windows are new or less than five yrs old its not likly to be the hinges.

Ps you may need to break the silicone seals with a stanly blade first so that the plastic outer frame pops back a few milimeters then re-seal with new.

hope this helps...
