We have big sliding patio doors at the back of our house. They have been sticking, but now one of the has come off the runners. OH managed to get it back on but we are now concerned that they are not working and not very secure. The doors themselves are fine, but the fitting is obviously not.

I may be being thick but I don't know where to start getting this sorted out. Do I ring a joiner or a windows firm? I can't be doing with the whole double glazing hard sell. I am also very scared by how much it would cost.

Any ideas?

If you have managed to get the door back on the runners can you not just oil the wheels to stop it sticking again and coming off. It may be worth a try anyway.

On the whole with repairs on uPVC sliding patio doors you are better to call in help rather than trying to repair it yourself. I would avoid calling out a locksmith or a double glazing window company because they are unlikely to be able to repair it. You need to call out a specialist double glazing repair company. Try looking in yellow pages under "double glazing repairs". You could also do a search online. If the parts on your door have been discontinued your patio should in most cases be repairable by fitting a different brand of gearing.
