Title: window handles broken
Post by: simon h on 27 June 2007 11:33 AM
We've moved into our new house and on a couple of the PVC double glazed windows the handle/locking mechanism is very loose. The window bolts correctly but cannot be locked with a key. Basically I think they're not great quality windows and the handle/lock bit has broken. Is it possible to replace just the handle bit rather than the whole window? Also as I have no idea who installed them, are these parts failry interchangeable or will a company who did not originally install them have trouble fitting new handles (if it's possible!)

Thanks

I have a similar problem on my windows, so any help would be appreciated!

Before you look at replacing handles etc. have you tried just tightening the handles.

The handle is held on with 2 screws which maybe behind cover caps.

For uPVC windows there are basically three different types of handle:

1, Tilt'n'Turn handles https://www.upvc-hardware.co.uk/handles/tilt-and-turn-window-handles
which are for open in tilt'n'turn windows.

2, Spindle drive Espagnolette window handles https://www.upvc-hardware.co.uk/handles/espag-upvc-window-handles
for outward opening windows with gearing/locks inside.

3, Cockspur window handles https://www.upvc-hardware.co.uk/handles/cockspur-upvc-window-handles

For outward opening windows with no gearing/locks inside.

All these handles are lockable with a key. There have been many different styles of these three handle types from different manufacturers over the years. Handles of the same type but of different styles are interchangeable so you can fit a new style handle that looks different to your original without problems as long as you choose a handle of the same type.

You should be able to replace the lock inside the window too if you wanted, follow this link to see some different types available
